Each client is unique when it comes to weight-loss

Neelu came and saw me a few months ago, wanting help with losing weight. She had tried many diets without any success. She was highly motivated, an essential component to any dietary change. By changing the types of foods she was eating, and the frequency, she was able to easily reach her goal weight.

When clients come and see me for weight-loss, I don’t use the same approach for each person. It completely depends on their unique situation and what I think will be the most likely approach to help them achieve their goals.

“Despite leading an active life, regular exercise and regulated diet, I was getting over weight. I tried my best to keep myself into shape but to no avail.

I tried all fad diets, like eating less, eating no carbohydrates, protein drinks etc etc but nothing seemed to help.

Few months back got to see Diane Stride who put me on a balanced diet. The change in eating 4 meals a day at regular intervals made a huge difference and I lost weight and reached my goal in 3 months. It’s even hard for me to believe when I step on the scales that now I eat more food than before and still lost the extra weight.

Health benefits of losing weight

Each person is unique when it comes to weight-loss. For some people their reason is to look better, improve their self-esteem, wear different clothes. For other people, it is purely to improve their health.

Richard came to see me a few months ago for weight loss. He needed to have surgery to his knees, but the surgeon wanted him to first lose weight. Richard was highly motivated to change his habits. I first assessed what he was doing and gave him a meal plan to help guide him through losing weight. Richard has never ceased to amaze me with his positive attitude about the changes he has had to make. Even after all these months and all those shed kilograms, he is still finding the whole process easy. It is very rewarding to see him walk so much easier and to know that he is able to partake in many more activities now, due to changes he has taken on board and decided to make. Excellent news Richard.

These are Richard’s words:-

“The reason why I started this diet was to reduce my weight for a knee replacement operation. I started out at 104kg and after three months I am now 84kg, and this resulted in cancelling the knee operation. I am able to walk now without pain and my general health is much better. Even my sugar levels have dropped, so I am now only a marginal diabetic. The actual diet was wonderful. I have never really felt hungry following it and I now do not miss any of the fatty and starchy foods, oils, margarine, beers and sweet foods. The foods recommended were very easily followed. Even when going to restaurants I can find lovely none fatty menus and can drink modest amounts of wines. I really recommend this Diane Stride diet to any one who wishes to lose weight”.

I have struggled with being overweight for 30 years. I realised early on that my battle was really with food rather than weight. While I managed to lose weight a few times by restricting the food I ate for a few weeks at a time, I could never maintain it for long and so my weight would soon balloon again. I felt like I had a secret (eating) life and I felt ashamed of being fat. Over the years I tried everything I ever came across to try to stop overeating. But no matter what, all I ever wanted to do was eat and eat and eat. I think that maybe I was the Hungry Caterpillar in a previous life.

In 2014, at 44, I had a health scare that meant I was in Critical Care for 5 days. While wired to the hospital bed I reflected on my life. I was proud of everything, and at peace with everything, except that I had never been able to figure out how to stop overeating and was potentially going to die fat. As it transpired, I didn’t die and so I left hospital determined that I would now stop over eating and lose weight. Instead I gained over 10 kg in as many weeks. I felt both panic stricken and entirely hopeless.
 
Even though I was so sure there was nothing left for me to try, other than surgery, I went to Diane to see if she could help me. I was not hopeful. Yet Diane was so calm and clear and kept it really simple for me – and told me to follow an approach to eating that I had never heard of before. It turned out I didn’t know everything about losing weight after all!
 
Diane outlined an approach to eating, a lifestyle, on a single A4 sheet of paper with only a dozen or so words. As Diane went through it with me, it seemed like it was something I could do. It involved eating rather than starving which was a great start! It also involved foods I loved and so, with Diane’s encouragement, I could focus on eating these things (rather than focusing on what I wasn’t going to be eating anymore). 
 
Diane asked me what worried me most about following this recommended lifestyle and gave me simple pragmatic solutions for each of the worries I raised. Diane’s solutions gave me the breakthrough I needed to get started with this new way of eating.
 
Perhaps the most impactful difference to the approach to eating Diane gave me was that there was no mention of quantities. This allowed me to change what I ate without worrying about when or how much I ate. Diane has given me no expectation of how much I should lose or by when - yet has reassured me results will come, and continue to come. This approach was magic as it stopped me worrying about some destination weight and getting there within a specified time-frame.
 
Once when I became confused, I emailed Diane for direction and she immediately clarified things for me and got me back on track with focusing on enjoying the new lifestyle rather than worrying about how fast the weight was coming off.
 
In addition to the original single A4 sheet, Diane has also given me recipes, tips and ideas to help me maintain variety in my eating. I have only met with Diane 3-4 times in the last 8 months and yet have lost over 20kg following her simple approach to eating. I have not weighed or measured what I eat. I have just followed the lifestyle. More importantly I have my energy back and no longer have seriously swollen feet.
 
I am now trusting that the balance of weight will come off over time. I am also now entirely hopeful, for the first time in my adult life, that I can sustain this simple and satisfying approach to eating and therefore ultimately sustain a normal weight for the rest of my life.

The most useful thing in my sessions with Diane, is the knowledge you gain about the actual way we eat and the biological impact food has on your body.  In addition, understanding the social side, how weight works and the phenomenon of feeling fat. The biggest change this has made in my life is being able to control sugar, learning that it is ok to eat and snack and learning how to recognise when I am hungry.
